Caring for a Teen or Young Adult Child with ASD

Caring for a Teen or Young Adult Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Welcome

The transition to adolescence and young adulthood is an exciting and challenging time for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their caregivers. Puberty can be a very confusing time for any adolescent, but it is especially so for individuals with ASD. Just like other teenagers, teens with ASD are dealing with changes in their bodies and feelings. Caregivers often wonder how to determine the best way to help their teen manage his or her physical and emotional changes. While challenging for both the caregiver and individual with ASD, there are many ways to prepare teens and young adults for these growing years.

While transitions in their body are happening, teens and young adults with ASD are also preparing for life after high school. The future can seem daunting during adolescence, yet there are resources and services available to help teens and young adults with ASD transition to the exciting possibilities after high school, such as working, living on their own, or going to college. By preparing early and learning appropriate skills and information for success, teens and young adults with ASD can have productive and rewarding experiences in whatever options they explore.
